A Sault Ste. Marie athletic trainer, once credited by Team Jacobs for playing a major role in the rink's early development, has been charged following a year-long RCMP investigation into steroid and cocaine trafficking.
As SooToday reported yesterday, 34-year-old ___ ____ _______ is facing 13 charges including trafficking, importing, possession and production of controlled substances, after police seized 3.6 kilograms of suspected steroids, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines and currency.
Muncaster is owner and founder of Xclusive Private Personal Training Studio at 523a Queen Street East, although his personal Facebook page now describes that involvement as "past."
Similarly, his status as "sponsored athlete at Magnum Nutraceuticals" is now listed on Facebook as "former."
A 2012 profile prepared by Muscle Insider magazine describes Muncaster as "experienced in training clients of all different fitness levels, from national champions in fitness and figure competitions... to some of the province’s top university athletes."
The stairway leading to Muncaster's second-floor gym is shown as photographed by SooToday late Monday.
SooToday has confirmed that Muncaster was training Team Jacobs early in 2012, just as Canada's powerhouse curling team was beginning its rise to world dominance.
Jacobs, E. J. Harnden and Ryan Harnden were all involved at that time.
Reached by us late Monday, Ryan Harnden downplayed Muncaster's role, portraying it as minor.
"Yeah, a long time ago," he said. "He didn’t really train us. Just gave us workout plans. That’s about it."
Harnden told us that the team did not use steroids, and that Muncaster wasn't involved in its Olympics training.
"That has nothing to do with our team so I won’t really have any comments or anything," Harnden said.
However, a March 21. 2012 post on the official Team Jacobs Facebook page lavished praise on both Muncaster and Xclusive Personal Private Training.
"He is the main reason for our physical and nutritional development and we will continue to work with him this summer to prepare for next season," the team posted following its 5–6 finish in the 2012 Tim Hortons Brier.
Ryan Fry joined as third a month later.
And it was the following season that Team Jacobs started to win big: first place in the 2013 Brier, a silver medal at the 2013 Ford World Men's Curling Championship, then Olympic gold at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
The impressive physiques of team members drew international media attention.
"The Canadian men's curling team is pumped, stacked, built - whatever you call it, their biceps are busting out of their shirt sleeves," wrote Tamara Keith as part of the Olympics coverage on U.S. National Public Radio's All Things Considered.
But Team Jacobs has always attributed its muscular frames to old-fashioned hard work.
"We've been natural athletes all of our lives. Why change now?" proclaimed an April 2015 advertisement for Team Biosteel Sports, which showed off the beefy Canadian curlers in tight-fitting t-shirts.
"Our team has introduced a new level of fitness that the sport of curling has never seen," says the Team Jacobs website.
"We are no longer 'curlers'; we are athletes. Our team firmly believes that being in top physical condition not only helps aid your muscles over the course of a long competition, but, equally important, ensures you are mentally strong until the last rock has been delivered."
In July, 2013 Matt Dumontelle, the alternate on Team Jacobs, was suspended for two years after testing positive for the banned substance methandienone, an anabolic steroid.
Dumontelle admitted the violation, explaining that: “I was taking a workout supplement that I believed was safe."
"Clearly, it was not and I regret that decision,” Dumontelle said.
As police searched for evidence at the Queen Street gym of its former trainer, Team Jacobs was in Banff, Alberta over the weekend, winning $47,000 for the top spot in the Pinty's TSN All Star Curling Skins Game,
SooToday left phone messages late Monday with Brad Jacobs, E. J. Harnden and Ryan Fry but did not hear back from them before this article was completed.
