I was going to write a piece on this based on the fact that Victims services compensates victims for violent crimes. There s a lot more to be said here. People should apply and make sure that the public is advised about how they are being treated. I am going to include a post I shared elsewhere however that speaks to the comment above about the money not being the point of the law suit. I respect that it is not the primary reason most victims fight for the justice they are denied but it should not be discounted as an important aspect of change and accountability.
Call for a truth and reconciliation. This is an important time to talk about compensation for victims. As a victim of crime re-victimized by a brutally callous justice system this is part of the restoration. With all due respect to the families who say that it is not about the money; it is not necessary to justify the reasons one asks for reparation. And even if the money is not needed by some, it is desperately needed for others.
The system/guilty parties are let off the accountability hook when victims dismiss monetary rewards as part of their healing process; but we have to remember where we live, how and what this society values.
It is most certainly NOT human life; it is MONEY. When we ask and insist that they part with their money, it STARTS to put a VALUE on the losses we suffer. They will NEVER feel the loses victims experience but they WILL miss and morn for their money.
